It’s hard to imagine that so many years have passed since the The Breakfast Club cast made us almost wish we could have Saturday detention in 1985, right?
Other than the clothes, hair, and Saturday detention dating, the movie theme of ‘teen against the man’ it seems pretty standard even today. Yes, I know, high schoolers are pushing to grow up and make their way in the world, if only it weren’t for adults and other teens getting in the way.
So how is it that this cast of The Breakfast Club are now the adults? And how can it be that a cast member is dead? It seem like an impossibility that makes me gag at the thought.
Let’s go through the cast members and see who’s still with us and who isn’t.
Emilio Estevez
Andrew Clark, played by Emilio Estevez, was the jock wrestler who gets Saturday detention for beating up and taping the buns of some poor kid. I included his character’s video confession below.
Emilio Estevez seems to have done the least amount of acting compared to his Breakfast Club counterparts. Imdb shows that he directed in between his acting gigs, but lately he’s been pretty quiet on the acting front.
So is he with us or not?
Yes, he is with us!
Anthony Michael Hall
Brian Johnson, played by Anthony Michael Hall, was the resident smart guy who came to be at Saturday detention for bringing a flare gun to school. He wanted to kill himself in front of everyone because he was getting a B! His confession is below.
Anthony Michael Hall has been a working actor since before The Breakfast Club. His work has been steady mostly in TV series but he is still a film actor. Looking over his imdb page he seems to be doing well for himself.
So is he with us or not?
You betcha, he’s with us!
Judd Nelson
John Bender, played by Judd Nelson, back in the day would have been called a Dead End or Biker Kid. He had the biker chain wallet and flannel shirt that tough guys wore. His character was more a victim of his circumstance and his tough exterior hid his scared kid with no control of his situation. Here is his life video.
Judd Neslson has been acting none stop in film and TV movies and series since The Breakfast Club. He’s made his way in the world and has not stopped acting.
So is he with us or not?
Yup, still here and going strong!
Molly Ringwald
Claire Standish, played by Molly Ringwald, was the most popular girl in school. She came from a divorced home where both parents lavished her with money and things to help ease their guilt. To get Saturday detention, she skipped school to go shopping with her friends.
Not even her daddy could get her out of her predicament, so I included her lipstick video below to show her character’s great strength of talent. Too bad her detention mates tore her to pieces over it.
Molly Ringwald has been active in film, TV movies and series since she was a child. She took some breaks in acting, most likely around the birth of her children, but she always come back to acting.
So is she with us or not?
For sure, she is perfectly alive!
Ally Sheedy
Allison Reynolds, played by Ally Sheedy, was a bit of a mystery to the other Saturday detention teens. While they were pouring out their stories she mostly just watched and listened. It was pretty sad to find out that she was there because she didn’t have anything else to do. I’m including a clip below of her purse scene because that was her way of sharing.
Ally Sheedy worked TV movies and series and did several films before her part in The Breakfast Club. She has been acting constantly ever since.
So is she with us or not?
Yeppers, she very much here!
John Kapelos
So who was Carl the Janitor, played by John Kapelos, you might ask? Well, he was the eyes and ears of Shermer High School. Carl was one of two adults on duty during Saturday detention. Below is his clip on the custodial arts.
Beleive it or not, but John Kapelos was only 3 years older than Judd Nelson when he played Carl in The Breakfast Club. By far he has the most acting credits than any of the other actors who show up in the school scenes. According to imdb he has more than 4 times as many acting credits than Emilio Estevez who is only 6 years younger than Kapelos.
So is he with us or not?
Oh my Gosh, yes!
Paul Gleason
Paul Gleason played vice principal Richard Vernon, who had the nasty job of supervising Saturday detention, also know as, “The Breakfast Club”. I bet VP Dick Vernon could hardly wait until he could be promoted to principal and pass this crappy job on to the next slop. I included this funny scene of what it must be like to work around teens.
Paul Gleason had a long TV series and film career mostly playing disagreeable characters.
So is he with us or not?
Nope, you figured it out! Paul Gleason died in 2006 of mesothelioma at age 67. He trained for his tough guy parts at the Actor’s Studio in New York City.
