Classic Toy Trucks for Boys: Constructing Childhood Memories

These days, there is no shortage of distractions for kids trying to pass the summer or goof off while they’re supposed to be doing homework. But in an age before video games and wall-to-wall internet and televisions channels, the choices were more limited — and *better*! For proof, you need look no further than these classic toy trucks for boys, playthings that have built a century (and more!) of childhood memories.

Tonka Dump Truck toy

This toy is a heavy-duty memory maker, a durable construction toy made to last for years. Boys who played with this toy loved pulling it all around their neighborhood or making up new adventures where they could drive into caves or over hillsides and under tunnels. Heck, you could even *make* the tunnels with the Tonka dump truck … or at least haul away the leftover dirt.

Tonka Fire Engine

The toy fire engine was one of the most popular toys for boys back in the day, and it’s still a favorite toy today. All kids love to put out fires, right? This toy is available both with its own siren or as an emergency vehicle that can be hooked up to other Tonka vehicles. In fact, Tonka has produced many versions of the venerable fire truck through the years, beginning with a now-rare model with an aerial ladder, born in 1956. It’s probably the most scarce of all Tonka toys.

Buddy L Pickup Truck

One of the most popular toy trucks for boys is this sturdy, toy pickup truck manufactured by Buddy L. This toy truck was one of America’s first ride-on toys — OK, only for really little kids! — and it can be seen in many toy shops to this day. It’s available in red or blue with a shiny finish that shines under bright lights, making them very attractive when in a toy store. They also have many accessories for this pickup truck, such as trailers and attachments that can be hooked up to other Buddy L vehicles.

Buddy L Tow Truck

This toy tow truck manufactured by Buddy L is a toy that every little boy needs. It has a sturdy design and plenty of extras to keep the imagination revved u. The toy tow truck also features headlights and taillights for added realism!

Of course, the main drawing card is the onboard winch that allows you to tow other toy cars and trucks.

Buddy L Delivery Van

This toy delivery van is a toy that every little boy needs. The Buddy L Delivery Van has an opening door, rolling wheels and side mirrors for added realism! You can even load up the back with toy cargo to transport.

Nylint Farm Truck Stake Bed

The Nylint Farm Truck Stake Bed has an opening tailgate and windshield for added realism! Loading up the back with toy cargo will take hours of fun-filled playtime away from your kiddo and may even spur on dreams of firing up a career in agriculture down the road.

Nylint GMC Pickup Truck

The toy GMC Pickup Truck has realistic details like a cab with windows and a windshield. The doors don’t open, but they’re fully defined in cutaway detail, and the interior is complete with seats, steering wheel and dashboard. The tailgate does open, though, inviting any boy to spend hours loading up and hauling his booty around the farm — even if it’s just his bedroom — all day long.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox Trucks

No list of classic toy trucks would be complete without an entry from these two titans of tiny vehicles. Matchbox toy trucks have been around for as long as most of us can remember, and they’re still going strong. Hot Wheels toy trucks were created in the ’60s, along with other cars from the company, to compete with Matchbox.

Today, that rivalry is still strong, with toy trucks of both brands still being made and sold in toy stores all over the world.
