Although all of the Care Bears have played important roles in the franchise over the years, the ten original Bears tend to hold a lot of nostalgic sweetness for kids of the 1980s.

- Love-a-Lot Bear, who was effused a loving demeanor all the time.
- Tenderheart Bear, who always exemplified the best of the Care Bears, and who remains the face of the franchise today.
- Wish Bear, who granted wishes to kids.
Besides the “Unlock the Magic” Care Bears listed above, the series has featured dozens of other Bears over the years, including some that venture outside of the main species, such as Polite Panda and Perfect Panda.
There have also been a host of Care Bear cousins, which encompass a much wider swath of the animal kingdom: Brave Heart Lion, Cozy Heart Penguin, Playful Heart Monkey are just a few examples.
